Job Description

The Electronics Engineer will participate in all aspects of the development of complex optoelectronic products. The ideal candidate will possess relevant experience in hardware/firmware/software and will apply his or her skills both independently and as part of a team in any or all of the following specific areas:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Design conceptualization based on customer/internal requirements and specifications
  • Design and simulation of precision analog circuits for driving and sensing optoelectronic devices
  • Mixed signal system design utilizing MCUs, DSPs, FPGAs, etc. including algorithm development and implementation
  • Circuit prototyping and performance evaluation
  • Schematic capture, PCB layout, BOM generation and maintenance
  • Working with vendors to achieve highly reliable state of the art PCB assemblies
  • Writing PC side software to facilitate characterization and engineering level testing of designs
  • Thorough documentation of all designs

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Ability to read and generate schematic diagrams
  • Proficiency in PCB layout (any EDA package acceptable)
  • Hands-on lab experience (soldering, test and measurement)
  • Ability to collaborate with other members of the team

Education/Experience Requirements:

  • BSEE (or other stem discipline), equivalent qualifications will be accepted as well
  • Equivalent work experience will be considered in lieu of formal degree

Junior Test and Characterization Engineer

Freedom Photonics LLC, a growing high-technology company based in the Santa Barbara area is seeking to hire a Junior Test and Characterization Engineer. 

Job Description

The Junior Test and Characterization Engineer will work with the photodiode team to develop and execute test and characterization plans for photonic components.  The test and characterization engineer will also take responsibility for building new test sets and updating and modifying existing test sets as necessary.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Interface with the technical team leaders to develop and perform tests for photonic devices
  • Perform data collection, analysis and visualization for review with device scientists
  • Mount/wire bond photonic devices in preparation for test and analysis
  • Perform test set maintenance and calibration
  • Construct new test sets, including cryogenic components and tooling
  • Transfer new test protocols into production line use
  • Generate and maintain test documentation
  • Work with Excel, Power Point, Matlab/Python to analyze and present data and findings

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Basic understanding of electronics with working knowledge of resistors, capacitors, diodes
  • Basic knowledge of cryogenics used for variable temperature testing
  • Experience interfacing test instrumentation with computers using GPIB
  • Experience coding in visual basic, C-sharp, Python or equivalent
  • Experience working with simple circuits for test purposes
  • Experience trouble shooting test equipment such as oscilloscopes, optical spectrum analyzers, SMU
  • Experience with Excel, Matlab, Python or other data analysis software
  • Willingness to take on technical challenges
  • Patience to optimize test sets and refine quality of test data
  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills to work in a dynamic team environment
  • Hands-on experience with chip-level test setups a plus (optical alignment, pin probes, etc.)
  • Technical writing skills is desired

Education/Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in physics, electrical engineering or computer science or other related fields
  • 2+ years’ experience in industry is desired

Manufacturing Engineer

Freedom Photonics LLC, a growing high-technology company based in the Santa Barbara area is seeking to hire a Manufacturing Engineer. 

Job Description

The Manufacturing Engineer will work as part of the manufacturing team to produce photonic products.  The manufacturing engineer will perform sustaining engineering duties for the production line as well as take part in new product insertion.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Support and improve of existing assembly equipment and processes
  • Participate in hands-on packaging of laser and photodiode products, including chip cleaving, die and lens attachment, hermetic sealing and test
  • Test set maintenance and calibration
  • Construct of new test sets
  • Participate in package design for new products, including mechanical, optical, and thermal elements with emphasis on design for manufacturing
  • Transfer new assembly and test protocols into production line
  • Generate and maintain test and assembly documentation
  • Maintenance of SPC charts and SPC standards for production test sets
  • Use Excel, JMP, Power Point, Matlab to analyze and report data

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Experience with packaging processes involving precision placement of chips and small optical components
  • Experience with software such as SolidWorks and Zemax, is a plus
  • Experience interfacing test instrumentation with computers using GPIB
  • Experience coding in visual basic, C-sharp or equivalent
  • Experience trouble shooting assembly and test equipment
  • Willingness to take on technical challenge.
  • Patience to optimize test sets and refine quality of test data.

Freedom Photonics LLC, a growing high-technology company based in the Santa Barbara area is seeking to hire a Photonic Device Engineer.

Job Description

A Photonic Device Engineer will be working as part of a design and test team for semiconductor lasers and photonic integrated circuits (PICs) for a variety of applications. Examples include both integrated active and passive photonic devices, in III-V and Si based platforms. The following job duties are of equal importance:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Photonic Device Design
    • The ideal candidate will have industry experience with modeling of both active and passive photonic devices, as well as de-embedding design parameters experimentally
    • The candidate have industry experience with a range of photonic design practices and methods
  • Mask Layout
    • The candidate will work with process engineers to convert device designs into a viable fabrication process. Understanding of device fabrication processes is a must
    • Based on the fabrication process, the candidate will work with device engineers on producing lithographic mask sets for the fabrication. Hands on mask design experience is a plus
  • Testing
    • The ideal candidate will be able to formulate test plans and design test campaigns necessary to characterize a variety of different devices, determine, monitor and improve yields, and support production
    • Part of the job will be related to the design and building of new test stations, and their automation
    • Hands on experience with photonic device testing in an industrial setting is a strong preference

Requirements

  • Advanced degree in Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics or Physics, with a strong background in waveguide photonics and semiconductor device physics, or equivalent experience
  • Hands-on industry experience with design and test of photonic ICs and/or semiconductor (high power) lasers, minimum 3 years experience
  • Self-motivated team player able to work with minimum supervision desired
