Photonics Packaging Engineer

We are a supplier of high-end, cutting-edge photonic solutions that span broad application range, from demanding optical communications systems and optical sensing to atomic and quantum sensing and quantum information systems. We are seeking to add to our world-class team in Santa Barbara, and are looking for an Photonics Packaging Engineer.

Job Description

The Photonics Packaging Engineer will work with the Laser and Photonic Integrated Circuit design team to develop and implement advanced packaging solutions for photonic devices and systems.  The work will also include working with vendors, maintaining and updating project schedules and maintaining and updating bills of materials.  Hands on activities in the lab will include implementation and improvement of processes such as, but not limited to, epoxy bonding, soldering, lens placement, lens alignment, wire bonding, and active optical alignment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Interface with the photonic design team to understand packaging needs and requirements
  • Develop relationships with vendors to obtain quotes, lead times, and to follow up on ship dates
  • Simulate and design optical lens trains for free space beam propagation or fiber coupling
  • Use solid works to visualize solutions to complex mechanical problems and generate mechanical specs
  • Complete cad drawings for obtaining quotes and ordering parts from machine shops and other vendors
  • Documentation of new drawings, and version control using Solid works PDM
  • Tolerance analysis for complex optical alignments
  • Thermal analysis and stress/strain analysis
  • Process development, ranging from complex assembly and alignment sequences to improvement of solder joint uniformity
  • Hands on process development with complex tools including vacuum soldering station, precision alignment stations, seam sealers and leak checking equipment.
  • Project management skills including report writing, presentation preparation, and scheduling.

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Solid works
  • Zemax, FRED, or other optical simulation experience
  • Finite Element modelling (stress, strain, thermal)
  • Experience with mechanical fabrication, machining, prototyping
  • Autocad
  • Understanding of machine tools and processes, dimensioning and tolerancing
  • Good communication skills
  • Enjoy working with a team/collaboration
  • Experience with trouble shooting processes
  • Failure Analysis
  • Ability to write technical reports and generate appropriate figures and documentation

Education/Experience Requirements:

  • B Engineer or B. SC or higher in mechanical engineering or similar field
  • 2+ years of experience with relevant hands-on experience
  • Candidates with some optics experience are preferable
  • A willingness to learn is mandatory

Optical Engineer

Job Description

The Optical Engineer will particial in the design and implementation of semiconductor laser packages, assembly and test fixturing, optical mounting solutions, and associated fabrication and assembly processes for prototype and volume production high power laser diode modules.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Production of detailed optical designs and prototype procurement and test
  • Optical alignment, integration, characterization and testing of optical systems
  • Development of package assembly processes; design and implementation of assembly stations
  • Support the design and assembly of laser test and characterization stations
  • Documentation of design work and participation in technical report writing
  • Interfacing with other team members, vendors, and customers
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Optical design experience using Zemax, CodeV, FRED, OSLO, or similar tools
  • Demonstrated ability to work with suppliers to meet technical, schedule, and cost requirements
  • Familiarity with principles of design of experiment, engineering statistics
  • Hands-on experience in components, tools, and practices used in optics such as lens mounting, imaging systems, laser operation and cooling, optical metrology, etc.

Education/Experience Requirements:

  • BS degree in Optical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering or related technical field
  • Advanced degree or work experience
  • Strong communication skills with demonstrated ability to cooperate and collaborate with co-workers, managers and vendors

Photonic Device Engineer

We are seeking to add to our world-class team in Santa Barbara, and are looking for a Photonic Device Engineer.

Job Description

A Photonic Device Engineer will be working as part of a design and test team for semiconductor lasers and photonic integrated circuits (PICs) for a variety of applications. Examples include both integrated active and passive photonic devices, in III-V and Si based platforms. The following job duties are of equal importance:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Photonic Device Design
    • The ideal candidate will have industry experience with modeling of both active and passive photonic devices, as well as de-embedding design parameters experimentally
    • The candidate have industry experience with a range of photonic design practices and methods
  • Mask Layout
    • The candidate will work with process engineers to convert device designs into a viable fabrication process. Understanding of device fabrication processes is a must
    • Based on the fabrication process, the candidate will work with device engineers on producing lithographic mask sets for the fabrication. Hands on mask design experience is a plus
  • Testing
    • The ideal candidate will be able to formulate test plans and design test campaigns necessary to characterize a variety of different devices, determine, monitor and improve yields, and support production
    • Part of the job will be related to the design and building of new test stations, and their automation
    • Hands on experience with photonic device testing in an industrial setting is a strong preference

Requirements

  • Advanced degree in Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics or Physics, with a strong background in waveguide photonics and semiconductor device physics, or equivalent experience
  • Hands-on industry experience with design and test of photonic ICs and/or semiconductor (high power) lasers, minimum 3 years experience
  • Self-motivated team player able to work with minimum supervision desired
