Photonic Device Engineer

Freedom Photonics LLC is a world-leading photonics company based in the Santa Barbara area. We are a supplier of high-end, cutting-edge photonic solutions that span broad application range, from demanding optical communications systems and optical sensing to atomic and quantum sensing and quantum information systems. We are seeking to add to our world-class team in Santa Barbara, and are looking for a Photonic Device Engineer.

Job Description

The Photonic Device Engineer will be working within Laser and Photonic Integrated Circuit design group on a wide variety of photonic devices and photonic systems. The position will require advanced modelling and design, test and measurement skills. Strong problem-solving skills are required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Modelling and design of waveguides and lasers
  • Design of active and passive photonic integrated circuits
  • Design of and documentation of experiments and test structures
  • Materials characterization
  • Hands on work in the lab collecting data and comparing design characteristics
  • Debugging lab equipment and test sets
  • Interfacing with vendors and obtaining quotes, placing orders
  • Writing reports, documenting results, plotting and summarizing data
  • Understanding new applications, collecting or identifying and documenting device specifications and requirements
  • Manufacturing support, yield analysis
  • Failure Modes and Effects Analysis
  • 8D problem solving

Desired Skills and Knowledge

  • Physics based understanding of diodes, lasers, waveguides
  • Hands-on experience testing and characterizing diode lasers and/or Silicon or glass waveguides
  • Experience with Optics design and implementation
  • Experience or familiarity with semiconductor fabrication processes and tools
  • Mode solver software experience
  • Familiarity with Matlab or Scilab scripting tools for modelling
  • Experience with simple finite element modelling
  • Laser simulation experience preferred
  • Statistical Analysis software experience
  • Ray tracing software for design of lens assemblies
  • Working knowledge of basic electronics
  • Programming experience, C, C#, Visual Basic, Python or other
  • Applicants with Applied Physics background in Atomic Sensing and Optics will be considered
  • Strong communication skills and willingness to work collaboratively in a team environment

Education and Experience

  • Advanced degree in (MSc, MASc, MEng or higher) in Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering or similar field
  • 5+ years industry experience preferred.  Strong PhD candidates with directly relevant graduate experience will be considered
