Mechanical Engineer

Job Description

The Mechanical Engineer will be working as part of a photonic module design team for a variety of applications. Typical work includes mechanical and opto-mechanical design and implementation. The position will require modelling and design, test and measurement skills.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Production of detailed 3D mechanical designs and prototype procurement and test
  • Mechanical stress, deformation, and thermal analysis
  • Development of package assembly processes; design and implementation of assembly stations
  • Definition of metal fabrication/finishing processes such as machining and plating
  • Documentation of design work and participation in technical report writing
  • Interfacing with other team members, vendors, and customers

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Experience in performing mechanical design within a 3D CAD environment such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD or similar
  • Strong communication skills with demonstrated ability to cooperate and collaborate with co-workers, managers, and vendors

Desired Qualification:

  • Strong background in finite element thermal analysis using ANSYS, COMSOL, or similar tools
  • Optical design experience using Zemax, CodeV, FRED, OSLO, or similar tools
  • Experience with mechanical fabrication, machining, and prototyping
  • Demonstrated ability to work with suppliers to meet technical, schedule, and cost requirements
  • Knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) per ANSI Y14.5
  • Familiarity with principles of design of experiment, engineering statistics
  • Hands-on experience in components, tools, and practices used in opto-mechanics such as lens mounting, imaging systems, laser operation and cooling, optical metrology
  • Familiarity with semiconductor lasers and fiber coupling

Education and Experience

  • BS degree in Mechanical Engineering, Optical Engineering, or related technical field
  • Work experience or advanced degree is a plus

Photonic Design Engineer

Job Description

The Photonic Design Engineer will contribute to the development of advanced photonic components and systems for various harsh environment applications, such as cryogenic and high radiation, as well as to the development of high-performance photodiodes and infrared focal plane arrays. The Photonic Design Engineer will have responsibilities
including device and system design, design and assembly of test setups, test and characterization, data analysis, and reporting.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Architect photonic links, including performance requirements and component identification
  • Design and simulate photonic components to meet high performance metrics
  • Construct new test sets, including cryogenic components and tooling
  • Perform data collection, analysis, and visualization for internal review
  • Interface with the technical team leaders to assist research and development activities
  • Interact and communicate with a cross-disciplinary team of engineers and technicians

Essential Skills and Knowledge

  • Strong understanding of semiconductor physics and electromagnetism
  • Willingness to take on technical challenges
  • Patience to optimize photonic systems and refine quality of test data
  • Experience interfacing test instrumentation with computers (e.g. GPIB) is desired
  • Experience coding in one of the common languages (Visual Basic, C-sharp, Python, Matlab)
  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills to work independently and in a dynamic team environment

Preferred Skills and Knowledge

  • Experience with E&M simulation tools (e.g. Lumerical, HFSS, ADS, Sonnet, Microwave Office, etc.)
  • Experience with semiconductor physics simulation tools (e.g. TCAD or self-implemented models)
  • Knowledge of cryogenics used for variable temperature testing
  • Radiation testing and procedures
  • Mask layout design (integrated circuit or photonic components)
  • Experience with nanofabrication techniques
  • Semiconductor device characterization (e.g. I-V, C-V, S-parameter, etc.)
  • Use of optical test equipment (e.g. OSA, BERT, Lasers, Photodetectors, etc.)
  • Use of RF / Microwave equipment (e.g. VNA, ESA, signal generators, amplifiers)
  • Exposure to quantum experiments & technology (e.g. SSPDs, photon entanglement, SPDC/SFWM, etc.)
  • Experience with infrared detectors and focal plane arrays
  • Technical writing experience

Education and Experience Requirements

  • Masters degree or PhD in physics, electrical engineering, optics or other related fields
  • Additional 2+ years’ experience in industry is preferred
  • Other equivalent qualifications will be considered, including academic research

Photonic Device Engineer

Job Description

The Photonic Device Engineer will be working within Laser and Photonic Integrated Circuit group on a wide variety of photonic devices and photonic systems. The position will require advanced modelling and design, test and measurement skills. Strong problem-solving skills are required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Hands on process development for a new hybrid photonic integration capability
  • Hands on work in the lab collecting data and comparing design characteristics
  • Design of active and passive photonic integrated circuits
  • Design of and documentation of experiments and test structures
  • Materials characterization and failure modes and effects analysis
  • Understanding new applications, collecting or identifying and documenting device specifications and requirements

Desired Skills and Knowledge

  • Physics based understanding of diodes, lasers, waveguides
  • Hands-on experience testing and characterizing diode lasers and/or Silicon or glass waveguides
  • Experience with Optics design and implementation
  • Experience or familiarity with semiconductor fabrication processes and tools
  • Mode solver software experience
  • Familiarity with Matlab or Scilab scripting tools for modelling
  • Experience with simple Finite element modelling
  • Laser simulation experience preferred
  • Statistical Analysis software experience
  • Programming experience, C, C#, Visual Basic, Python or other
  • Strong communication skills and willingness to work collaboratively in a team environment

Education and Experience

  • Advanced degree (MSc, MASc, MEng or higher) in Electrician Engineering or Applied Physics, with an emphasis on Photonics, Atomic Sensing and/or Optics

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
