Job Description

The Senior Process Technician will be working as a key member of the device fabrication team to process innovative semiconductor lasers and photonic integrated circuits (PICs) for a variety of applications. Examples include both integrated active and passive photonic devices, in III-V and Si-based platforms, for optical communications, sensing, and medical applications. The following job duties are of equal importance:

  • Participate hands-on in day-to-day semiconductor device fabrication in the cleanrooms.
  • Follows process traveler for wafer fabrication, input process data and communicate findings to engineers on daily basis.
  • Support process engineers in various processing and logistical tasks.
  • Help the team improve various wafer fab processes for manufacturability, design robustness, cycle time reduction, yield improvement, and cost saving
  • Participate in backend dicing/polishing and chip assembly processes.
  • Organize work flow, wafers and tools.

Requirements

  • > 5 years hands-on experience with wafer fab processes, such as photolithography, annealing, compound semiconductor wet etch and dry etch, thin film coating, metallization, cleaving, dicing and polishing.
  • Knowledge and experience in semiconductor processing characterization tools, such as SEM, AFM, microscopes, dektek profilometer, etc.
  • InP and/or GaAs processing experience is a plus
  • Experience in the UCSB nanofabrication facility is a plus
  • The ability to learn new processes and technique quickly
  • The ability to work well in a team environment with positive attitude.
  • The ability to organize and work in careful manner.

Job Description

A Photonic Device Engineer will be working as part of a design and test team for semiconductor lasers and photonic integrated circuits (PICs) for a variety of applications. Examples include both integrated active and passive photonic devices, in III-V and Si based platforms. The following job duties are of equal importance:

  • Photonic Device Design
    • The ideal candidate will have industry experience with modeling of both active and passive photonic devices, as well as de-embedding design parameters experimentally
    • The candidate have industry experience with a range of photonic design practices and methods
  • Mask Layout
    • The candidate will work with process engineers to convert device designs into a viable fabrication process. Understanding of device fabrication processes is a must
    • Based on the fabrication process, the candidate will work with device engineers on producing lithographic mask sets for the fabrication. Hands on mask design experience is a plus
  • Testing
    • The ideal candidate will be able to formulate test plans and design test campaigns necessary to characterize a variety of different devices, determine, monitor and improve yields, and support production
    • Part of the job will be related to the design and building of new test stations, and their automation
    • Hands on experience with photonic device testing in an industrial setting is a strong preference

Requirements

  • Advanced degree in Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics or Physics, with a strong background in waveguide photonics and semiconductor device physics, or equivalent experience
  • Hands-on industry experience with design and test of photonic ICs and/or semiconductor (high power) lasers, minimum 3 years experience
  • Self-motivated team player able to work with minimum supervision desired

Job Description

The Production Control Coordinator will be working as part of a manufacturing team. Typical work includes coordinating work orders for photonic device assembly and test, track inventory, assist with commercial product sales, and oversee document control.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Production
    • The candidate will work with manufacturing and engineering management to create revolving production schedules for packaging and test of photonic devices as well as electronic controller for these devices
    • The candidate will responsible for issuing and tracking work orders, ensuring that the required material is supplied to the production floor, as according to the production schedule
  • Inventory
    • The candidate will be responsible for production inventory control
      • coordinate incoming material inspections
      • track all inventory transaction such as work order pulls
      • initiate material procurement at minimum quantities or reorder points
    • Finished goods
      • The candidate will assist sales personnel to respond to sale orders
      • The candidate will control finished goods inventory as well as assist sales in the shipment of product to customers
    • Documentation
      • The candidate will be responsible for the control of production procedures, work instructions and forms

Education/Experience Requirements:

  • Associate Degree or at least 1-year Administrative Support experience
  • Microsoft Office: 1 year
  • ASANA experience (Preferred)
  • Self-motivated team player able to work with minimum supervision desired

Mask Designer

Job Description

The Mask Designer will be carrying out photolithographic mask layout using a proprietary C++ code-based platform. Some test and measurement of photonic devices may also be assigned.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • With the engineering team, help with definition of the mask layout and initial design documentation
  • Layout masks using C++ code in Visual Studio Environment
  • Generate final mask plate files and participate in ordering masks
  • Participate in design reviews
  • Coding of additional standard routines to define common building blocks
  • Maintenance of the mask layout code
  • Work with device engineers and the wafer fab team to ensure an appropriate process has been defined for each mask
  • Basic test and measurement of photonic devices
  • Organization/documentation of test data

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Strong knowledge of coding in one of the common programming languages (C++ preferred, but experience in any language is acceptable)
  • Great attention to detail
  • Curiosity and critical reasoning
  • Good with visualization of three-dimensional objects and shapes
  • Good communication skills, and ability to work with multiple individuals on a shared project

Education/Experience Requirements:

  • Minimum AS degree in Computer Science or equivalent field desired

Test and Characterization Engineer

Job Description

The Test and Characterization Engineer will work with the design team to develop and execute test and characterization plans for a wide variety of photonic components.  The test and characterization engineer will also take responsibility for building new test sets and updating and modifying existing test sets as necessary.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Interface with the photonic design team to define appropriate tests for novel new devices.
  • Collect data, and plot and summarize data for review with device scientists
  • Mounting/wire bonding photonic devices in preparation for test and analysis
  • Test set maintenance and calibration
  • Construction of new test sets
  • Transfer new test protocols into production line use
  • Generate and maintain test documentation
  • Maintenance of SPC charts and SPC standards for production test sets
  • Work with Excel, JMP, Power Point, Matlab to analyze and present data and findings

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Significant experience interfacing test instrumentation with computers using GPIB
  • Significant experience coding in visual basic, C-sharp or equivalent
  • Basic understanding of electronics with working knowledge of resistors, capacitors, diodes
  • Experience working with simple circuits for test purposes
  • Experience trouble shooting test equipment such as oscilloscopes, optical spectrum analyzers, SMU, signal generators
  • Experience with excel or other data analysis software.
  • Working understanding of basic statistical analysis.
  • Willingness to take on technical challenge.
  • Patience to optimize test sets and refine quality of test data.
  • Good interpersonal and communications skills to work in a dynamic team environment.

Education/Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelors degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering or Computer Science or other related fields

Job Description

The Senior Opto-Mechanical Engineer will be working as a key member of a high-power semiconductor diode laser product design team.  Typical work includes the opto-mechanical-thermal-electrical design and implementation from prototype to product of complex high-power diode laser modules.  This includes working on the design and implementation of the laser module mechanical assembly, optical alignment, and testing methodology.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Opto-Mechanical Design
    • Design and optimize actively-cooled and passively-cooled packages for high power laser products, accounting for mechanical, optical, electrical, and thermal aspects.
    • Perform tolerance analysis at system and subsystem levels.
    • Design with software tools such as SolidWorks, Zemax, and FEA analysis tools.
    • Specify and work with vendors to obtain components.
  • Assembly and Packaging
    • Participate in hands-on packaging of high-power laser products, including die attachment, lens attachment and optical alignment
    • Build test stations, design assembly fixtures, and use equipment as necessary for device assembly and packaging.
    • Organize data and draw conclusions based on design and experimental results.
    • Work with team to optimize assembly processes for transfer to low rate production, with considerations for cost, efficiency, and quality.
  • Program Support
    • Create technical documents such as reports, slides, and plans.
    • Support design reviews such as PDR, CDR, and PPR.

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Experience with FEA modelling software.
  • Knowledge of engineering mechanics and kinematics
  • Knowledge of vibration control and heat transfer

Education/Experience Requirements:

  • BS degree in Mechanical Engineering, Optical Sciences, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or related field.
  • Hands-on industry experience with design and assembly of opto-mechanical packages, minimum 3 years experience preferred
