Photodiode Design Engineer

Job Type: Full Time

Job Description

The Photodiode Design Engineer will work to develop and improve photodiode products within the Freedom Photonics Photodiode Team. They will participate in all elements of the development of these products, with a primary focus on design. The ideal candidate will have relevant experience with photonic devices and the design thereof and a collaborative attitude.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design and simulation of photodiodes based on customer/internal requirements and specifications
  • Design and documentation of fabrication processes for various detector architectures and materials systems
  • Develop, maintain, and debug test setups for device characterization; automate test setups where applicable
  • Perform data collection, analysis, and visualization
  • Interface with vendors and obtain quotes, place and track orders
  • Generate and maintain documentation on design and testing
  • Write reports and document progress towards new technologies
  • Support proposal writing efforts in new technology areas

Desired Skills and Knowledge

  • Physics-based understanding of photonic components (detectors, lasers, waveguides)
  • Hands-on experience testing and characterizing photodiodes
  • Experience or familiarity with semiconductor fabrication processes and tools
  • Experience with commercial design software for photonics, RF, and/or optics simulation (Lumerical, HFSS, Zemax, etc.)
  • Experience coding in Visual Basic, C-sharp, Python or equivalent
  • Experience with Excel, Matlab, or other data analysis software
  • Familiarity with electronics, with working knowledge of resistors, capacitors, diodes
  • Willingness to take on technical challenges
  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills to work in a dynamic team environment
  • Strong technical writing skills

Education and Experience

  • Advanced degree (MSc, MEng, PhD) in Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, or other related fields
  • Additional hands-on experience in industry preferred
  • Other equivalent qualification will be considered

Photonic Device Engineer

Job Description

The Photonic Device Engineer will be working within Laser and Photonic Integrated Circuit group on a wide variety of photonic devices and photonic systems. The position will require advanced modelling and design, test and measurement skills. Strong problem-solving skills are required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Modelling and design of waveguides and lasers
  • Design of active and passive photonic integrated circuits
  • Design of and documentation of experiments and test structures
  • Hands on work in the laboratory collecting data and comparing design characteristics
  • Debugging lab equipment and test sets
  • Collaboration and cooperation with the Laser and Photonic Integrated Circuit team

Desired Skills and Knowledge

  • Physics based understanding of diodes, lasers, waveguides
  • Hands-on experience testing and characterizing diode lasers and/or Silicon or glass waveguides
  • Experience with Optics design and implementation
  • Experience or familiarity with semiconductor fabrication processes and tools
  • Mode solver software experience
  • Familiarity with Matlab or Scilab scripting tools for modelling
  • Experience with simple Finite element modelling
  • Laser simulation experience preferred
  • Statistical Analysis software experience
  • Programming experience, C, C#, Visual Basic, Python or other
  • Strong communication skills and willingness to work collaboratively in a team environment

Education and Experience

  • Advanced degree (MSc, MASc, MEng or higher) in Electrician Engineering or Applied Physics, with an emphasis on Photonics, Atomic Sensing and/or Optics

Junior Test and Characterization Engineer

Job Type: Full Time

Job Description

The Junior Test and Characterization Engineer will work with the design and production teams to develop and execute test and characterization plans for photonic components.  The test and characterization engineer will also take responsibility for building new test sets and updating and modifying existing test sets as necessary.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Interface with the technical team leaders to develop and perform tests for photonic devices
  • Perform data collection, analysis and visualization for review with device scientists
  • Mount/wire bond photonic devices in preparation for test and analysis
  • Perform test set maintenance and calibration
  • Construct new test sets, including cryogenic components and tooling
  • Transfer new test protocols into production line use
  • Generate and maintain test documentation
  • Work with Excel, Power Point, Matlab/Python to analyze and present data and findings

Skills and Knowledge

  • Basic understanding of electronics with working knowledge of resistors, capacitors, diodes
  • Basic knowledge of cryogenics used for variable temperature testing
  • Experience interfacing test instrumentation with computers using GPIB
  • Experience coding in visual basic, C-sharp, Python or equivalent
  • Experience working with simple circuits for test purposes
  • Experience trouble shooting test equipment such as oscilloscopes, optical spectrum analyzers, SMU
  • Experience with Excel, Matlab, Python or other data analysis software
  • Willingness to take on technical challenges
  • Patience to optimize test sets and refine quality of test data
  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills to work in a dynamic team environment
  • Hands-on experience with chip-level test setups a plus (optical alignment, pin probes, etc.)
  • Technical writing skills is desired

Education/Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in physics, electrical engineering or computer science or other related fields
  • 2+ years’ experience in industry is desired
  • Other equivalent qualification will be considered
