Photonic Design Engineer

Job Type: Full Time

The Photonic Design Engineer will contribute to the development of advanced photonic components and systems for various classical and quantum applications, as well as to the development of high-performance photodiodes and infrared focal plane arrays. The Photonic Design Engineer will have responsibilities including device and system design, design and assembly of test setups, test and characterization, data analysis, and contribute to technical reports and proposals.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Design and simulate photonic components and systems to meet high performance metrics
  • Construct new test sets and test capabilities
  • Perform data collection, analysis, and visualization for internal review
  • Interface with the technical team leaders to assist research and development activities
  • Interact and communicate with a cross-disciplinary team of engineers and technicians
  • Contribute to technical report and proposal writing

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Essential
    • Strong critical thinking skills and a willingness to tackle open-ended technical challenges
    • Strong understanding of semiconductor physics and electromagnetism
    • Experience interfacing test instrumentation with computers (e.g. GPIB) is desired
    • Experience coding in one of the common languages (Visual Basic, C-sharp, Python, Matlab)
    • Strong interpersonal and communications skills to work both independently and in a dynamic team environment
  • Preferred
    • Experience with E&M simulation tools (e.g. Lumerical, HFSS, ADS, Sonnet, Microwave Office, etc.)
    • Experience with semiconductor physics simulation tools (e.g. TCAD or self-implemented models)
    • Participation in multiple MPW tape-outs
    • Understanding with nanofabrication processes
    • Semiconductor device characterization (e.g. I-V, C-V, S-parameter, etc.)
    • Use of optical test equipment (e.g. OSA, BERT, Lasers, Photodetectors, etc.)
    • Use of RF / Microwave equipment (e.g. VNA, ESA, signal generators, amplifiers)
    • Exposure to quantum experiments & technology (e.g. SSPDs, photon entanglement, SPDC/SFWM, etc.)
    • Experience with either infrared detectors, focal plane arrays, or photovoltaics
    • Technical writing experience

Education/Experience Requirements:

  • Masters degree (MS) or PhD in physics, electrical engineering, optics or other related fields
  • Additional 2+ years’ experience in industry is preferred
  • Other equivalent qualifications will be considered, including academic research

Associate Electronics Engineer

Job Summary and Description:

Freedom Photonics is seeking a talented and motivated multidisciplinary electronics engineer to participate in all aspects of the development of complex optoelectronic products.  The ideal candidate will possess relevant experience in hardware/firmware/software and will apply his or her skills both independently and as part of a team in any or all of the following specific areas:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Design conceptualization based on customer/internal requirements and specifications
  • Design and simulation of precision analog circuits for driving and sensing optoelectronic devices
  • Mixed signal system design utilizing MCUs, DSPs, FPGAs, etc. including algorithm development and implementation
  • Circuit prototyping and performance evaluation
  • Schematic capture, PCB layout, BOM generation and maintenance
  • Working with vendors to achieve highly reliable state of the art PCB assemblies
  • Writing PC side software to facilitate characterization and engineering level testing of designs
  • Thorough documentation of all designs

Skills and Knowledge:

Experience with RF (>=10GHz) simulation, layout, and active/passive component selection is desired, as is knowledge of optoelectronic components and/or systems, but neither are required to be considered for this position.

Education/Experience Requirements:

  • BSEE (or other stem discipline), equivalent qualifications will be accepted as well
  • Equivalent work experience will be considered in lieu of formal degree

IT Support Engineer

Job Type: Full Time

Job Description

The IT Support Engineer will be responsible for a variety of IT related roles including Technical Support, Server Maintenance and Network Administration.  Help on-site and remote employees with technical help including but not limited to email, computer updates, driver installations, and computer error troubleshooting.  Perform and monitor automated system maintenance such as data backup, system recovery, and configuration updates.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Respond to on-site and remote user computer related questions or technical assistance
  • Monitor and check for compromised systems, respond to system alerts
  • Maintain Windows Server systems, push out computer policy, schedule and maintain Windows Updates
  • Update documentation, procedures, and protocols for security practices
  • Be pro-active in maintaining network infrastructure with minimum cybersecurity standards
  • Maintain successful execution of server or computer backups
  • Communicate with various vendors for purpose of software and hardware acquisitions
  • Work with on-site Engineers to standardize computer configurations
  • Check computer inventory, perform component upgrades, maintain, and update equipment as needed
  • Become familiar with on premise databases for maintenance, backups, and troubleshooting

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Experience with Windows 10 and Linux operating systems, Windows Server 2016, 2019 is a plus
  • Software Experience: QuickBooks, Gmail, Office 365, PowerShell
  • Database Experience: with Microsoft Access, SQL databases or front-end development Ruby or HTML
  • Knowledge or ability to learn network fundamentals such as: TCP/IP, RDP, DNS, DHCP, VLANs, WiFi, Subnets, SSH, authentication and encryption protocols
  • Experience or ability to learn Windows Server applications such as: Active Directory, Group Policy Management, DNS Management, Event Viewer, Reliability Monitor, and SYSLOG
  • Ability to troubleshoot and problem solve on your feet, be able to find solution to unexpected problems
  • Exceptional technical writing ability, be able to create documentation for practices and procedures
  • Programming experience but not required in: C, C#, Visual Basic, Python or other
  • Strong communication skills and willingness to work collaboratively in a team environment

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a technical field from an accredited university, and or IT related Certifications such as CompTIA (A+, Network+, Security+), Cisco Certified Technician (CCT), Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA).
  • Information Technology Tier 1 work experience is a plus
  • Industry experience is a plus.

Production Control Coordinator

Job Description

The Production Control Coordinator will be working as part of a manufacturing team. Typical work includes coordinating work orders
for photonic device assembly and test, track inventory, assist with commercial product sales, and oversee document control.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Production
• The candidate will work with manufacturing and engineering management to create revolving production schedules for
packaging and test of photonic devices as well as electronic controller for these devices
• The candidate will be responsible for issuing and tracking work orders, ensuring that the required material is supplied to the
production floor, as according to the production schedule
• Inventory
• The candidate will be responsible for production inventory control
− coordinate incoming material inspections
− track all inventory transaction such as work order pulls
− initiate material procurement at minimum quantities or reorder points

• Finished goods
• The candidate will assist sales personnel to respond to sale orders
• The candidate will control finished goods inventory as well as assist sales in the shipment of product to customers
• Documentation
• The candidate will be responsible for the control of production procedures, work instructions and forms
Education and Experience Requirements:
• Associate Degree or at least 1-year Administrative Support experience
• Microsoft Office: 1 year
• ASANA experience (Preferred)
• Self-motivated team player able to work with minimum supervision desired
