Job Description

This is an opening for an opto-mechanical or mechanical engineer within the high-power semiconductor laser product design team. This position may be filled at a junior entry-level or at a senior mid-career level.

In this role you will participate in the design and implementation of semiconductor laser packages, assembly and test fixturing, optical mounting solutions, and associated fabrication and assembly processes for prototype and volume production high power laser diode modules.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Production of detailed 3D mechanical designs and prototype procurement and test
  • Mechanical stress, deformation, and thermal analysis
  • Selection of appropriate packaging materials including heatsinks, mounts, solders, and glues
  • Development of package assembly processes; design and implementation of assembly stations
  • Definition of metal fabrication/finishing processes such as machining and plating
  • Support the design and assembly of laser test and characterization stations
  • Optical alignment, integration, characterization, and testing of optical systems
  • Documentation of design work and participation in technical report writing
  • Interfacing with other team members, vendors, and customers
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Skills and Knowledge:

  • BS degree in Mechanical Eng., Optical Eng., or related technical field
  • Experience in performing mechanical design within a 3D CAD environment such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD or similar
  • Strong communication skills with demonstrated ability to cooperate and collaborate with co-workers, managers, and vendors

Desired Quailifications:

  • Advanced degree or work experience
  • Strong background in finite element thermal analysis using ANSYS, COMSOL, or similar tools
  • Optical design experience using Zemax, CodeV, FRED, OSLO, or similar tools
  • Experience with mechanical fabrication, machining, and prototyping
  • Demonstrated ability to work with suppliers to meet technical, schedule, and cost requirements
  • Knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) per ANSI Y14.5
  • Familiarity with principles of design of experiment, engineering statistics
  • Hands-on experience in components, tools, and practices used in opto-mechanics such as lens mounting, imaging systems, laser operation and cooling, optical metrology
  • Familiarity with high power semiconductor lasers and fiber coupling

Job Description

The Senior Photonics Test and Packaging Technician will be working on assembly of laser subassemblies, in-process characterization tests and assembly of full laser packages. Some of the work will be on pre-defined packaging processes and procedures, but this position will be required to perform assembly operations with minimal supervision based on the direction of engineering personnel. Teamwork with a number of other team members is to be expected. Standard test and assembly processes skills required are shown below. Candidates with familiarity with these processes is desired.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assembly of semiconductor chips and optical components onto ceramic carriers (subassemblies)
  • Assembly of optical lenses to high power laser arrays
  • Wirebonding of photonic devices, carriers, packages and test fixtures
  • Probing of bare chips and subassemblies using probe manipulators and probe cards
  • Running standardized tests and collecting and saving data
  • Assembly of full custom photonic packages
  • Running semi-automated packaging stations
  • Testing of full packages and documenting of test results

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Essential in this position is the ability to follow instructions precisely, work independently, document your work clearly and self-motivate.
  • Basic assembly skills for photonic packages and optical lenses to high power laser arrays
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office is required
  • Experience with packaging and assembly equipment such as chip cleaving tools, flip-chip bonding tools, vacuum soldering ovens, wirebonders, and die attach tools is a plus
  • Handling of delicate semiconductor chips and subassemblies in and around workstations

Education and Experience:

  • Minimum 5 years of related experience desired
  • Experience with laser beam analysis tools such as beam profilers and power monitors is a plus
  • A level of flexibility (ability to work occasional weeknights or weekends) is desired

Job Description

The Test and Characterization Engineer will work with the design team to develop and execute test and characterization plans for a wide variety of photonic components.  The Test and Characterization Engineer will also take responsibility for building new test sets and updating and modifying existing test sets as necessary.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Interface with the photonic design team to define appropriate tests for novel new devices.
  • Collect data, and plot and summarize data for review with device scientists
  • Mounting/wire bonding photonic devices in preparation for test and analysis
  • Test set maintenance and calibration
  • Construction of new test sets
  • Transfer new test protocols into production line use
  • Generate and maintain test documentation
  • Maintenance of SPC charts and SPC standards for production test sets
  • Work with Excel, JMP, Power Point, Matlab to analyze and present data and findings

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Significant experience interfacing test instrumentation with computers using GPIB
  • Significant experience coding in visual basic, C-sharp or equivalent
  • Basic understanding of electronics with working knowledge of resistors, capacitors, diodes
  • Experience working with simple circuits for test purposes
  • Experience trouble shooting test equipment such as oscilloscopes, optical spectrum analyzers, SMU, signal generators
  • Experience with excel or other data analysis software.
  • Working understanding of basic statistical analysis.
  • Willingness to take on technical challenge.
  • Patience to optimize test sets and refine quality of test data.
  • Good interpersonal and communications skills to work in a dynamic team environment.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelors degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering or Computer Science or other related fields
  • 2+ years’ experience in industry
  • Alternately, an MSc degree in a closely related field such as Semiconductor Physics, Photonics or Electrical Engineering

Job Description

A Photonic IC Layout Engineer will be carrying out photolithographic mask layout using a proprietary C++ code-based platform. In addition to mask layout the engineer will be maintaining documentation of best practices for standard design features and will maintain and update design rules and checklists. The Photonic IC layout engineer will be working closely with photonic device scientists and wafer fabrication engineers to ensure correct implementation of design and fabrication requirements in the mask layout. Some test and measurement of photonic devices may also be required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • With the engineering team, help with definition of the mask layout and initial design documentation
  • Layout masks using C++ code in Visual Studio Environment
  • Generate final mask plate files and participate in ordering masks
  • Participate in design reviews
  • Coding of additional standard routines to define common building blocks
  • Maintenance of the mask layout code
  • Work with device engineers and the wafer fab team to ensure an appropriate process has been defined for each mask
  • Maintain mask checklist and process design kit
  • Basic test and measurement of photonic devices
  • Organization/documentation of test data

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Strong knowledge of coding in one of the common programming languages (C++ preferred, but experience in any language is acceptable)
  • Great attention to detail
  • Curiosity and critical reasoning
  • Good with visualization of three-dimensional objects and shapes
  • Good communication skills, and ability to work with multiple individuals on a shared project

Education and Experience:

  • Minimum AS degree in Computer Science or equivalent field desired

Job Description

A Photonic Device Engineer will be working as part of a design and test team for semiconductor lasers and photonic integrated circuits (PICs) for a variety of applications. Examples include both integrated active and passive photonic devices, in III-V and Si based platforms. The following job duties are of equal importance:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Photonic Device Design
    • The ideal candidate will have industry experience with modeling of both active and passive photonic devices, as well as de-embedding design parameters experimentally
    • The candidate have industry experience with a range of photonic design practices and methods
  • Mask Layout
    • The candidate will work with process engineers to convert device designs into a viable fabrication process. Understanding of device fabrication processes is a must
    • Based on the fabrication process, the candidate will work with device engineers on producing lithographic mask sets for the fabrication. Hands on mask design experience is a plus
  • Testing
    • The ideal candidate will be able to formulate test plans and design test campaigns necessary to characterize a variety of different devices, determine, monitor and improve yields, and support production
    • Part of the job will be related to the design and building of new test stations, and their automation
    • Hands on experience with photonic device testing in an industrial setting is a strong preference

Requirements

  • Advanced degree in Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics or Physics, with a strong background in waveguide photonics and semiconductor device physics, or equivalent experience
  • Hands-on industry experience with design and test of photonic ICs and/or semiconductor (high power) lasers, minimum 3 years experience
  • Self-motivated team player able to work with minimum supervision desired
